Type of Braces for Jaw Surgery

Invisalign, Incognito lingual braces and fixed braces can be used for jaw surgery.
Sometimes a combination of different types of braces system is indicated.

The type of braces used for jaw surgery will largely depend on:

  • The severity of the bite and skeletal imbalance
  • Surgical team’s feedback after the assessment
  • The discipline and compliance of the patient to Invisalign wear
  • Patient’s lifestyle preference for work, school and social life.

Any type of fixed braces can be used for surgery first jaw surgery; such as traditional coloured braces, Damon q or Damon clear ceramic braces.

Invisalign can also be used for jaw surgery, though the surgical team may request for a few fixed buttons placed at strategic points just before surgery. As with any Invisalign treatment, compliance and proper wear is key to success.

For all surgical cases, regardless of the type of braces material used, braces elastics will be needed to guide teeth and jaws into their new corrected positions and must be worn as instructed. Sometimes, auxiliaries like micro-implants/ Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD’s) may be indicated by our surgical team or our braces specialists but this is on a case by case assessment.
