MARPE has positive effects on the airway by:
Reducing nasal airway resistance following expansion
Widening of the upper airway, particularly the transverse distance between dilator muscles
Short-term gains in nasal airflow after MARPE have shown promising results in selected cases
⚠️ Important Consideration⚠️
Airway obstruction is often multifactorial, involving not just the nasal passages (NP) but also oropharyngeal (OP) and laryngeal regions (LP).
A comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation is essential to determine the site and cause of obstruction.
At MyBracesClinic, MARPE is not used solely to treat airway concerns in the absence of skeletal or dental indications. We collaborate closely with Dr Shaun Loh, an ENT specialist at Gleneagles Hospital, to:
- Diagnose conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
- Assess nasal and upper airway resistance
- Evaluate if MARPE is appropriate as an adjunctive treatment in a broader airway management plan
