What Affects the Cost of Orthodontic Treatment in Singapore?

1. Complexity of the Case

The severity of your orthodontic condition is one of the main factors influencing treatment cost.

This includes:

  • Degree of crowding or spacing

  • Bite issues such as overbite, underbite, or crossbite

  • Whether extractions or growth modification are required

More complex cases typically require longer treatment times, more detailed planning, and specialised techniques, which may increase overall costs.

2. Type of Orthodontic Appliance

Different orthodontic systems vary in cost due to materials, technology, and customisation.

Metal braces – most cost-effective option

Damon, Ceramic or aesthetic braces – more discreet, slightly higher cost

Clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign) – higher cost due to digital planning, custom fabrication, and ongoing system innovation Invisalign has over 25 years of continuous clinical research, digital development, and system refinement. This advanced planning technology contributes to its higher laboratory and treatment planning costs compared to other aligner systems.

Lingual braces (hidden braces) – fully customised systems placed behind the teeth. These require specialised laboratory fabrication and advanced biomechanics. These systems use high-precision manufacturing and specialised alloys, including gold-based or nickel-titanium components.

3. Treatment Duration

  • Most orthodontic cases take 12–24 months

  • More complex cases may require longer treatment periods

  • Longer treatment duration may involve more adjustment visits and monitoring, contributing to higher overall cost

4. Expertise and Skills of the Clinician

Orthodontists are specialist dentists who undergo an additional 3 years of postgraduate training to master tooth movement, bite correction, and facial growth management.

In Singapore, recognised specialists are accredited by the Dental Specialist Accreditation Board.

Treatment provided by specialist orthodontists may be higher in cost, but reflects:

  • Advanced diagnostic expertise

  • Safer and more controlled tooth movement

  • Management of complex orthodontic and surgical cases

  • Greater predictability and long-term stability

Highly experienced orthodontists managing complex cases may also have higher professional fees.

5. Additional Procedures

Some cases require adjunctive procedures that can affect overall cost, such as:

Can Medisave be used to pay for orthodontic treatment?

For orthodontic cases requiring orthognathic (jaw) surgery, Medisave can cover part of the orthognathic (jaw) surgery costs but NOT the costs for surgical braces or surgical Invisalign.
