All You Need to Know About Invisalign Clear Aligners

Orthodontic treatments that help to align teeth have become increasingly popular in recent years. And one of the most prominent treatments today has to be Invisalign, which uses a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten the teeth and correct a range of orthodontic problems. Curious to find out why Invisalign is so popular? Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that effectively straightens teeth without the use of metal braces. It uses custom-made clear aligners that fit snugly over your teeth and gently pull them into the desired position over time. Because they are clear and can be removed, they are less noticeable than traditional metal braces.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Clear aligners customised according to the patient’s teeth are produced and given to the patient to wear. When worn, they apply a constant and gentle force to the teeth, stimulating the bone around the teeth to remodel and adapt to the new position. This process is known as bone remodelling, and is the key to achieving lasting results with Invisalign.

The clear aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day for two weeks, and are only removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. The aligners may feel loose over time, but will only be replaced once two weeks have passed. The new set of aligners will apply gentle pressure to your teeth again, pushing them into position.

Is Invisalign for Everyone?

Invisalign is made for all ages, there is even a treatment, known as Invisalign First, designed for growing children. However, Invisalign can only be used to treat minor orthodontic problems, such as bite issues and overcrowding. Some severe cases may require traditional metal braces or surgery to resolve.

The Process of Getting Invisalign

To get Invisalign, you will need to first schedule a consultation with an orthodontist trained in providing Invisalign treatments. During this appointment, the orthodontist will examine your teeth, take x-rays and impressions, to create a customised treatment plan for you. They will also show you a virtual representation of how your teeth will move during treatment, as well as discuss your treatment process and goals with you.

Once your treatment plan is finalised, your clear aligners will be fabricated using 3D printing technology.

The set of clear aligners will be given to you to wear and replace every two weeks. You’ll also be scheduled for a follow-up appointment with your orthodontist every six to eight weeks to check the progress of your treatment and to receive your next batch of clear aligners. The number of appointments you’ll need depends on your treatment plan.

Once your treatment is complete, you’ll be recommended to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position.
